i often hear non-aboriginal people complaining "aborigines tell racist jokes too, so why can't we?" well, the difference is that most of the aboriginal jokes native peoples tell are self-deprecating, rather than denigrating, and reflect insider knowledge, rather than reinforcing outsider ignorance.

for example, below are three jokes about native americans, by native americans. i don't find these offensive. you be the judge - let us know what you think about these ones...

"A tourist traveling through the prairies of the USA stopped at a small border town and went to a bar. He stood at the end of the bar, ordered a drink, and lit up a cigar. As he sipped his drink, he stood there quietly blowing smoke rings. After he blew nine or ten smoke rings into the air, a big angry Indian stomped up to him and said, "One more remark like that and I'll smash your face in!""

"A woman is driving toward home in Northern Arizona when she sees a Navajo woman hitchhiking. Because the trip had been long & quiet, she stops the car & the Navajo woman climbs in. During their small talk, the Navajo woman glances surreptitiously at a brown bag on the front seat between them. "If you're wondering what's in the bag", offers the woman, "it's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband." The Navajo woman is silent for awhile, nods several times and says, "Good trade"."

"An old indin was on his deathbead...he only had hourz to live...suddenly he smellz the scent of frybread wafting into his room. Ahhhh...he loved frybread more than anything! With his last ounce of strength, he pickz himself up & goez into the kitchen...where his wife is making a fresh batch!
He reachez for a fresh steaming piece, and, WAP! His wife nailz him in the hand with a big wooden spoon, "Leave them alone", she sez, "those are for the funeral!" "
