» woorama - Taboos and Sexism: Aboriginal Cultures Misrepresented

In response to Taboos and Sexism: Aboriginal Cultures Misrepresented posted by woorama:

are sex/gender taboos in place for a reason? should patriarchy be challenged in traditional societies as in the west? does destroying traditional sex roles promote equality or simply allow men to colonise areas of female experience?

for example, do i have the right as a male to be anti-abortion or pro-choice? is it any of my business? is the real issue the fact that women have had power taken away from them in the form of ancient knowledge of herbs and body rhythms to avoid or terminate pregnancy? has this loss of women's business expertise allowed male doctors to dominate a previously female domain, and strip choice from women?

if so, does it not make sense to retain some areas of sexual differentiation and "no-go zones" for men and women, in terms of men's and women's business? and do gender taboos therefore protect women's rights rather than restrict them?

a lot of questions. anybody care to elaborate?
