» Dooky - Australian Indigenous GLBT/Sistergirls PhD research...
Dear Tyson,My name is Aude and I am a young gay researcher of Mauritian background. I'm currently a PhD candidate in Health and Social Anthropology at the University of Provence (France) and I arrived in Australia 3 months ago to further a research project about Australian Indigenous GLBT/sistergirls experiences in urban settings.
I collected about 50 life stories over 2 previous fieldworks and I am still seeking more participants in every States.
The semi-directed interviews last about 1 hour and 30 minutes; it is anonymous and conducted in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner. The context of the interview is fairly casual (though it is usually taped, if ok). For instance, the participant might be asked to talk about his/her childhood and adolescence, experiences in his/her family and community as a gay or transgender person, as well as experiences on the gay scene and in the wider Australian community as an Aboriginal or TSI person.
If you agree to participate or want to know more about this research (ethic matters, etc.), please contact me (mobile ; 04 05 268 057 or landline : (02) 9516 1975/ e-mail : aud_mmsh@hotmail.com).
Thank you very much for your help.
Kind regards,
Aude CHALON

In response to Australian Indigenous GLBT/Sistergirls PhD research... posted by Dooky:sounds like an amazing study - and i like your approach - you've obviously looked into your indigneous research ethics (unlike the guy in the article i've got coming up tomorrow - it's called "native mythology" -check it out).
your project sounds so good it makes me wish i was gay so i could participate. but unfortunately i'm irretrievably hetero, and generally go around in bare feet rather than high heels.
please feel free to share any knowledge on this thread though - i am pathetically ignorant about indigenous gay issues, and could really use some enlightening on the topic.

Hi there Tyson,Thank you very much for your reply and for your interest in my PhD research.
I read in your profile you had some connection with the Wik People of Cape York and I was wondering if you actually knew anybody there who could help me in some way or another(?).
Best of luck with your own projects.
Kind Regards,
Aude (mobile : 04 05 268 057)

In response to Australian Indigenous GLBT/Sistergirls PhD research... posted by Dooky:for most of the mission towns you'll have no luck - homophobia is so deeply entrenched that homosexuality is suppressed. this wasn't around in traditional society - it came with the invaders. but it is a reality now, especially on the mainland. (bit different on the islands). you might recall in my article how the mainland communities said that the tiwi people were cursed because of the sistergirls.
anyway, darwin is the best place to go, i think. any gay indigneous people unnaccepted in their communities tend to flee there, where there's a bit of a scene.
