In Wik language, "yiil" is the word for the aerial roots in the mangroves that draw oxygen down into the mud of the ecosystem. Effectively, they are the lungs of the mangroves. It is interesting to note that "yiil" is also the word for fish gills. Both involve transfering oxygen from one element to another.
When you begin to wonder how the old people figured all that out with no microscopes and labs, you begin to get an idea of how sophisticated Indigenous science is.
