What is the connection between fish gills and mangrove roots? Look here for links to articles about Indigenous Science.

In Wik language, "yiil" is the word for the aerial roots in the mangroves that draw oxygen down into the mud of the ecosystem. Effectively, they are the lungs of the mangroves. It is interesting to note that "yiil" is also the word for fish gills. Both involve transfering oxygen from one element to another.

When you begin to wonder how the old people figured all that out with no microscopes and labs, you begin to get an idea of how sophisticated Indigenous science is.

The following articles touch on Indigenous scientific knowledge, which is not a static ancient artifact, but a growing, constantly changing system of innovation that continues to evolve through interaction with new knowledges and new problems.
